Definition. Jus cogens (from Latin: compelling law; from English: peremptory norm) refers to certain fundamental, overriding principles of international law. A peremptory norm (also called jus cogens or ius cogens / ˌ dʒ ʌ s ˈ k oʊ dʒ ɛ n z, ˌ j ʌ s /; Latin for "compelling law") is a fundamental principle of international law that is accepted by the international community of states as a norm from which no derogation is permitted. The jus cogens (from the Latin “ biding law ”, an imperative norm) concerns principles of law considered universal and superior, and which must constitute the bases of the imperative norms of general international law.
Thus, these two concepts are different from each other.
